A brief history of playing cards
I’d always taken playing card ranks (e.g. 10, J, Q, K, A) and suits (spades, clubs, hearts, diamonds) for granted.
But after a recent game of poker with friends, I began to ask questions: Why spades, clubs, hearts, and diamonds? Why kings, queens, and jacks? What do “jack” and “ace” mean? And where did playing cards come from, anyway?
